Losing weight can be very beneficial for your health, but it is important that you go about it in a healthy way. Crash dieting is often ineffective, because it makes people irritable, gives them food cravings and leads to unsustainable levels of weight loss. Nutritionists and health authorities will always advise against fad diets, as they often cut out food groups and contribute to an unhealthy attitude to weight loss. Instead it is recommended that you take up a healthy eating chart and plenty of exercise.
Healthy eating
If you have been following a healthy eating plan and you still haven’t lost any weight, try to be patient and stick with it. In many cases, it may take a little while for the results to show but slower weight loss is easier to maintain and you are less likely to lose weight and have it return. Some people assume they will benefit from a quick-fix or extreme solution, such as weight loss surgery like a gastric bypass or gastric band surgery, but this should be considered as a last resort for people who have genuinely tried to lose weight naturally but have not been successful.
If you have been eating a healthy, calorie-controlled diet for a long time and still have not seen any difference, you should consider seeing your GP. Your GP will be able to discuss your eating habits with you and help you with your weight loss. Doctors recommend a steady weight loss of around 1-2 lbs per week until you reach a healthy BMI (body mass index).
Exercising
Exercising burns calories and this will assist you in losing weight. Your body takes in and burns off calories and if you burn off more than you take in you will lose weight. If you are not a fan of going to the gym there are plenty of other sports and activities you can try, from dance and aerobics classes to tennis, swimming or hiking. The most effective way of losing weight is to merge healthy eating with exercising. This will also benefit your general health, as a balanced diet contains all the nutrients your body needs and exercise helps to keep blood pressure stable, improves circulation, flexibility and strength and also boosts confidence and reduces the risk of mental health problems, including depression.
Stay positive
If you are trying to lose weight you need to adopt a positive attitude and be patient. Weight loss can take a while but you will gradually feel the benefits and it can boost your self-esteem to no end. Try not to ban any foods, as this can make you desire them more, instead use them as treats if you have managed to stick to your diet; part of the weight loss battle is learning to eat unhealthy foods in moderation. Some people also find that they try harder if they reward themselves; for example with the money you save on fast food, save up for a new top or a trip away. Dieting with friends or family members can also be more effective as you can support each other and make the process a bit more enjoyable.
